BENIN REPUBLIC

Benin Republic

I recently took a trip to the Benin Republic by road and I’d say it ended in tears. Well, literally. I sure had a great time but it was just filled with so many unnecessary dramas I could have avoided.

Benin Republic, in my opinion, is not a bad country, and it definitely did worth the time I spent there. I traveled with my friend – Barakat – and we had such an amazing time.

The road trip lasted about six hours. The duration includes border control, and the time required to settle in our Airbnb apartment.

How to get to Benin Republic by road

From wherever you are, find your way to the Badagry roundabout, then take a bike or a cab to the Seme border.

Seme border is a settlement in Nigeria on the border with Benin Republic, about an hour drive from Badagry.

I would suggest you do bike because there are a lot of check points on the road which bikes could stylishly avoid, and the cab men would claim to carry you past the border – illegally of course.

When the bike trip ends, alight and stroll down to the Nigerian border for about three to five minutes. And that’s where your cross over to Benin Republic begins.

Note that if you want to go through the appropriate channel, make sure to cross the border yourself, on foot, to get your passport stamped.

Arriving in Cotonou, the first thing I noticed was the mode of transportation – even a blind man could tell. There were so many bike riders and they were well coordinated.
They wore yellow aprons which served as their uniforms as well as helmets. Most importantly, they were not honking unnecessarily. Could never be Lagos 😩.

I have more to tell you about my trip, please keep in touch and leave me a comment below.
